OK, I realize that election day is a bit late for kicking off a write-in campaign but when looking at our County Election Ballot it amazed me how many posts had only one candidate.
Commonwealth Attorney: The Republican Candidate and “___________________”
Sheriff: The Incumbent Candidate and “___________________”
Commissioner of Revenue: The Republican Candidate and “___________________”
Treasurer: The Republican Candidate and “___________________”
Member of Board of Supervisors Center District:
The Republican Candidate and “___________________”
That means 5 out of 9 electoral posts were uncontested. This surprises me on two levels.
- Is this really a democratic process if only one person is on the ballot?
- With so many folks looking for work, this would be a great opportunity to show initiative and start a grass roots write in campaign. A chance to get involved to make real change. You could get a whole brand new career and, based on the amount of competition, you would stand a good chance of keeping said job for a very long time.
There was one post which I would not want to run for. It was the Soil and Water Conservation Director of John Marshall District. Not only were there four candidates, but voters could vote for no more than three.
That means it must really suck for the 4th who gets voted off the island. My wife said it reminded her of the guy always selected last for Dodge Ball. Kind of like the political version of the guy on crutches. Who would want that?
And besides, how do you have three people work for the same position? The district is not that big and it does not even make sense on how they would divide up the work. Do they alternate days? Weeks?
OK, in all fairness, I did looked up why there are multiple elected officials for the same position. According to the Constitution of the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (VAAofSaWCD) three people are elected as directors at the time of election and then elected by the Association to President , VP and Treasurer. There was also some mention of a 2nd VP which I would think could be thrown to the loser as a consolation prize, but who am I to say. I didn’t write the constitution of the VAAofSaWCD!
So, if you find yourself suddenly unemployed and needing a job, you could always move to Fauquier County Virginia and run for election. Let me know, I’ll write you in and vote for you!
Except of course for the dreaded Director of VAAofSaWCD!
