It’s good to be a DC sports fan now. Wait, did I just say that? Somebody pinch me and wake me up because I must be dreaming.
The Caps are playing real good hockey and advanced past the first round of the NHL Playoffs.
The Nationals are competing for the best, yes I did say best, record in Baseball.
And the Washington Redskins have RG3 as their latest, and certainly, greatest QB in recent history.
The first round of the NFL draft is over and a record number of trades, swaps and moves up and down the board in a fast a furious fashion. You can thank the new rookie wage scale for that excitement. IT was absolutely great to witness!
The Vikings started the night off by juking Cleveland out of three picks for swapping the 3rd and 4th picks. Yes Richardson is good and will be, by all accounts, a great RB; but to give up 3 picks to move up one spot just because you think the Bucs or somebody else is talking the same deal? But in the end, everybody got the players we thought they would and the Vikings got more draft picks. Good Deal!
I feel compelled to say at this point that “everybody got the players we thought” is a bit of an overstatement. Mel Kiper totally whiffed on the Richardson, Blackmon and Claiborne picks and scored a less than impressive 18% correct, 13% if you take away the two gimmie picks of Luck and RG3, for the entire first round!
Even though I am a diehard Redskin fan, I applaud the Cowboys for making a bold and not expensive trade up to grab Claiborne. Lets see how he does against RG3 and the Skins before calling this one a success though. 😉
Our other two NFC East Rivals also had a pretty good 1st round with the Eagles D getting a little bit scarier with Fletcher Cox and the Giants grabbing another power runner in David Wilson. I certainly hope the skins look to adding bodies to their O line in the later rounds.
The other noteworthy teams from the first round, in my mind are:
– Fellow Minnesotans on the same Cardinal team – Frees up Larry and Floyd gets a great mentor and the cards didn’t have to do anything to get him. Great Pick.
– The Patriots moved up the draft! Whose running this show? Really, Coach B never moves up. But they desperately needed defensive help and got just that with Jones and Hightower. Impressive
– Dear Jags, no more offensive excuses with drafting yet another offensive weapon in Blackmon.
– The Panthers get a great tackle machine with Kuechly
– And the Rams have so many picks that they are going to just start hoarding talent like Brockers.
Oh and believe it or not, ESPN has opened their Fantasy Football and you can select draft rooms and reactivate your leagues and create teams and . . .
