Who Will Win The Presidential Election – Obama or Romney?

At the risk of either alienating or winning over nearly half of the registered voters out there;  47% of you to be exact  😉  I am going to give you a couple alternative ways for predicting the presidential election this year.

1)      A Redskin Victory:

A Redskin Victory Could Predict The Presidential Election

The myth is that if the Washington Redskins win their last home game before the election, the incumbent party stays in power. If the Redskins lose, the challenging party takes the White House.

The Redskins game has correctly predicted 17 of the last 18 presidential elections. They were wrong in 2004, when the ‘Skins lost to the Green Bay Packers, but incumbent President George W. Bush held onto the White House, beating Democratic rival John Kerry the week after the game.

This year, the Redskins will face the Carolina Panthers at home on Nov. 4, the Sunday before the election.

2)      World Series:

The winner of the World Series could predict who wins the election

Which league wins the World Series has long been seen as an indicator of which party makes it to the White House — though the record suggests baseball is not be a perfect predictor of a presidential election outcome. The myth has an imperfect record, correctly predicting 16 elections since 1920 and getting it wrong seven times.

Legend has it, that if an American League baseball team wins the World Series, a Republican will win the White House. If a National League team wins, Democrats will take the top spot.

In 2004, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the Democratic presidential candidate, dismissed the myth and rooted for the Boston Red Sox, with his campaign claiming it was “a new century” and a “fresh start.”

The Red Sox won but, true to legend, Kerry lost.

Will President Obama, the former senator from Illinois, make the same mistake? He has predicted his hometown Chicago White Sox, vying to make the playoffs in the American League, would take the trophy this year. But if the American Leaguers win, legend has it Obama, the Democrat, will lose.

So, who do you think will win the Presidential Election?

Things on my Mind

Fantasy Football is in full tilt mode!

So, here are some interesting statistics from a survey a few years ago.

40% men think about fantasy football every day

30% think about sex

18% think about money and stocks

4% food and drink

Wow !  My blog covers 2 of the top 3 topics on men’s minds!

——————————————————————————————–

For the first time in history, congress turned down a president’s request for a speech and for the first time in history a president rescheduled and gave said speech to congress and the nation on NFL opening night.

He talked about jobs, money and other stuff.  In other words . . .

Topics that less than 18% of the male population is currently thinking about.

——————————————————————————————–

Historically speaking, there is a 0.134% chance of the Washington DC area experiencing a 5.8 magnitude earthquake like the one we just had a couple weeks ago.

50% residents polled in the D.C. area think it is more likely that we will have another earthquake.

Rather than . . .

41% think congress will successfully address the nation’s debt.

38% of Virginians think congress will get their act together.  (yes we are a skeptical bunch)

——————————————————————————————–

Only 1% of ESPN Fantasy Teams owned Randall Cobb before Thursday Night.

After tying a record 108 yard TD kickoff return, and catching a pass from Aaron Rodgers for another TD, I bet that number will go up next week.

Fumbled Returns Jock Strap Award

And thanks to him, we have not 1 but 2 early nominees for the first ever Fumbled Returns Jockstrap awards.

#95 Martez Wilson

And

#35 Korey Hall

ESPN has no pictures or videos of poor ol’ Mr. Wilson.  But we do!

You can see the video of Mr Cobb faking Mr. Wilson out of his “you know what” and leaving Mr. Hall face planted in the turf – here!

Mr. Wilson is my early choice for the first ever Fumbled Returns Jock Strap award.

What do you think?

But hey, the first NFL week has just started.

I am sure we all will have lots more to think about before it is over  . . .

Recovery and Speculation…

OK, so I’ve recovered from insanity, sort of…

At least I’ve restored my blog theme back to the way it was.

So, in that respect, I’ve recovered.

However, my April watch lists seem to be quite speculative and perhaps investing in some of this is slightly crazy but here we go with the Fumbled Returns April Watch Lists.

Starting Lineup

QDEL – Quidel Corp
This is one from last years pandemic list and has shown some good strengthening in price lately.
ARQL – ArQule Inc
This is a bio tech company which has turned itself around and is showing promise.
ATSG – Air Transport Services Group Inc
An airline company that seems to be bucking the trend and showing profit.
EMAN – eMagin Corp
I hate 3D. But this company produces diodes and other optic and electronic parts that are necessary for the latest and greatest tech/AV craze. And as a result, its stock has been on a real rocket ride. Best of all, if this craze does take off, there is very little institutional money in this stock. Once they discover it, watch out!
GENT – Gentium SpA
Another Biotech/Pharm company that has posted good profits and expects positive cash flow for 2010; which is always a good thing.
IDSA – Industrial Services of America Inc
Recycled metals. Either an industry on the rebound or companies are targets for acquisitions (a competitor NGA was recently bought out). Either way, speculation wise, these are positive influences for a stock.
MFLX – Multi-Fineline Electronix Inc
This is actually one of my few pattern plays in that MFLX looks like it might be setting up for a breakout from a cup and handle pattern.
ZQK – Quiksilver Inc
A retail distributor that has more than profited from the rebound in the retail market and hopes that the economy has/is starting a recovery.
AAPL – Apple
ipad fever. Thats it.
FDO – Family Dollar
Recovery in the retail market along with continued unemployment and reduced wages are both positives for this retailer.

Bench

LINC – Lincoln Educational Services Corp
A stock that has fallen about 10% from recent 52week highs. Worth watching for a possible continuation of a rebound.
AFAM – Almost Family Inc
A left over from last month which has a good balance sheet and continued interest as a result of the Obamacare legislation.
COCO – Corinthian Colleges Inc.
A good well run educational company which stands to profit so long as folks are willing to return to school for added marketability in this troubled economy.
ENDP – Endo Pharmaceuticals Holdings Inc
Speculation drove this stock up. A less than stellar quarterly report knocked it back down, but, it has bounced off of the low support level and all those speculators look like they are willing to keep this stock afloat.
IDCC – InterDigital Inc
A digital communications company whose stock has truly leveled off. Good news will drive it up. Bad news will pull it back down. I just can’t decide which will happen first. Worth a watch but until definitive news, maybe pick one of my other listed stocks.
POZN – POZEN Inc
Another biotech/pharm company with FDA report due by the end of the month. Speculation and a good report will do wonders for this stock.
SNTA – Synta Pharmaceuticals Corp
Another speculative biotech/pharm company which is actually able to come close to profitability.
SNTS – Santarus Inc
Ditto.
ARO – Aeropostale
Wow! not another biotech/pharm company. Rather a well run retailer, with a recent good quarterly report, and a recovering economy. All positive signs.
GME – Game Stop
Between a good bounce off of record low price, speculations of a possible take over and the prospects of a recovering economy; this stock shot up well over 25% last month. Perhaps the hype, like the economic recovery, is not over.

Last month I hit two good quarterly reports (always a risky proposition during reporting season and a possible recession) and got lucky. FDO 12.5% and then ARO 10% netted me a +20% gain for March.

There are some carry overs from last months list(s) such as FDO, ARO, COCO, GME, AFAM; but lots of new speculative additions. Normally I hesitate to have too many eggs in one basket (biotech/pharm) but then again, I am never one to shy away from opportunity.

We shall see how things pan out for April.

Hope everyone had a great and joyous Easter weekend.

B+

Obama gives himself B+ for first months in office.

Gee, what school kid wouldn’t want to give himself or herself their own grade?

How Nice.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the AMERICAN political grading system comes in the form of elections…

And the last time I checked, there are still 3 years to go.

So, for now, I, as a registered grader, will stick with the scale our county school system uses for all kids in their first years of public education.

Incomplete with needs improvement and no days absent.

You can keep track of performance here

Leap Frog Commentary…

The Jets play Leap Frog with MJD!

Obama bows to the world!

And Leonard Nimoys Children

(yes that is his teams name)

blows past me

(Santa’s Little Helpers)
in the standings of my commished league and snaps my 4 game win streak and
2 week sweep of all my leagues!

The Redskins learn how to block and Ladell Betts has his best game in years!
In fact, it has been so long since he was the featured back that he was quoted…

“I was just joking on the way over here (post game interview), I didn’t remember how to get to this room,” Betts said with a smile.

Speaking of the Redskins, We can strike another potential coach off the list…
Gruden has accepted a multi-year contract to stay in the broadcast booth…
But as the Stupid Sports Blog pointed out…

Someone please get them a table or limit viewing to just the head and shoulders!!!

And on the CBS NFL pregame show the announcers were doing a bit where players and personnel were being beamed (AKA Star Trek) to other teams. They ended the bit beaming Cowher to the Browns….

Cowher half screaming, half laughing, was quoted as “BEAM ME BACK!”

So, even though I lost, All this made for a highly illogical and wonderful Fantasy Football Week!

Washington Provides Hardship Relief…

As part of President Obama’s economic stimulus plan, the Washington Redskins went to one of the most put down and out places in the United States; Detroit, and provided a well rounded dose of generosity which made the whole state of Michigan feel, well, much better and they actually cheered!!!

Also, on the bright side, Campbell scored 28 points for my fantasy league…
And now all my Michigan friends like the Redskins…

I can Caddy !

Woods, Obama Are Making Plans for a Very Powerful Pairing in Washington
By Barry Svrluga and Kathy Orton
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, July 6, 2009

After winning the AT&T National yesterday at Congressional Country Club, Tiger Woods has done just about everything he wants to in the Washington area. He has played in, and won, Presidents Cups. He has hosted his own tournament, and won it. He participated in the run-up to President Obama’s inauguration.

That, though, is where the next step might be. Woods said yesterday, after he won his tournament, that he and Obama have talked about playing golf together — and they will in the future.

“His schedule and my schedule are a little bit busy,” Woods said. “His is really busy. He’s got a lot on his plate.

“We’ll get it done sometime down the road. I don’t know when, but we will definitely do it.”

Once that pairing happens, Woods said he has just one other item to check off his to-do list in Washington.

“The only thing I haven’t done here,” he said, “is go to a Skins game yet, but hopefully I can do that down the road.”

Trash Talk’n with the Pres…

Here is a great series of articles that is pure Washington and Sports.

Talk a little trash…
By J.E. Skeets

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and it’s okay to admit if you have, I’m told rent is cheap), you probably heard that President Barack Obama sat courtside at D.C.’s Verizon Center Friday night, watching his hometown Chicago Bulls take on the Washington Wizards.

The First Fan drank beer, read the game program and left early (with four minutes left) during a blowout. “All common American activity,” as Tom Ziller put it, “except most of us don’t sit courtside, nor are we important enough that the NBA will hold up a tip-off until we get to our seats.” (Speak for yourself, Z!)

But Obama’s night of “Joe Plumber Americana” didn’t stop there. He also exchanged a few playful words with a diehard Wizards fan sitting a few rows back. Yes, that’s right, the 44th President of the United States joined in a little trash talk. Awesome.

The vocal instigator: Miles Rawls (above, standing, “heckling”), the commissioner of the Barry Farms’ Goodman League — a big-time summer circuit in Southeast D.C., which has starred Gilbert Arenas and Kevin Durant, among others.

Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog, in a fun must-read, talked with Rawes about trading barbs with the President.

Here’s a snippet from the interview:
[Rawls] said his chatter, like always, was unscripted, “right off the top of my head. I just had to see how he was gonna take it,” Rawls said. “Once I knew he was a big trash talker, too, about them Bulls, that means the gloves came off.” […]

“I wasn’t heckling the President and I don’t heckle the players. I talk about their weaknesses. We was having a good time. He was talking trash and I was talking trash. I couldn’t believe he was that laidback and real. I loved it.”

And while they talked through much of the game, Rawls — who had never met a President — said no lines were crossed. “I wasn’t disrespectful,” he said. “I know my limits.”

So, for example, he told the President that if he was rooting for the visitors, he was “gonna have to keep it to a low roar, because we’re cheering for the Wizards over here.” Obama, in turn, repeatedly needled Rawls about the Wizards’ habit of letting leads evaporate, especially when the Bulls made a run.

“We was just going back and forth,” Rawls said. “Once Chicago started coming back, he told me, ‘Now I think you need to sit down.’ When Tyrus Thomas dunked on somebody, he turned around, was talking smack. Then JaVale McGee had that alley-oop, and he gave me the high five. We was just supporting each others’ team, having a good time.”

Is Obama the Real Thing?

Maybe, maybe not; but the administrations drink of choice certainly is….

The Obama Team’s Drink of Choice?
Coke, Not Pepsi

By MICHAEL SCHERER / WASHINGTON

In apparent homage to the new President, PepsiCo has plastered the sides of buses and bus stops in the nation’s capital with slogans like “Yes You Can,” “Optimismmmm” and “Hope.” In each poster, the letter “O” is inscribed with the redesigned Pepsi logo, a red, white and blue sphere that echoes the rising sun image used by the Obama campaign.

It is not hard to interpret the message. Since 1984, Pepsi has been marketing itself as the hip, happening beverage of youth – “The Choice of a New Generation,” as its longtime slogan went. And Obama, one of the youngest men to serve as President, is nothing if not hip, especially among young consumers who supported him by wide margins. Pepsi says that the campaign is not a political endorsement. “We’re not interested in following political tailwinds,” says Nicole Bradley, a Pepsi spokeswoman. “But we are interested in cultural change.”.

That said, the marketing campaign, which includes TV and print ads as well, does raise a question: Is Pepsi actually the choice of the Obama Administration?

My reporting at the White House suggests the answer is a resounding no. Several senior Administration officials are committed cola drinkers, and without fail they spend their days sipping from a can of Diet Coke, a product of Pepsi’s chief competitor, Coca-Cola. On Monday, as members of Congress and key lobbyists filed into a briefing room for the final event of a daylong fiscal summit, they were greeted with an ice chest full of complimentary Diet Coke, not Diet Pepsi. (Montana Democratic Senator Max Baucus was one of many to grab a can.) Hours earlier, at a breakout session with members of Congress in the Indian Treaty Room, Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag handled not one, but two cans of Diet Coke during the nearly two hour session. Larry Summers, Obama’s top economic adviser, rarely walks anywhere in the White House complex without a can of Diet Coke in his hand. He is well known for interrupting conversations to take another swig.

But these examples do not even constitute the most damning evidence against Pepsi. Late last year, Obama’s nascent Administration worked out of transition offices in a downtown government building, which was serviced by only Pepsi-brand vending machines, according to three people who worked in the building. Two Administration officials have told me that a group of Obama aides, frustrated by the security gauntlet required to go to the corner store, stocked a refrigerator with Diet Coke in open rebellion against the available options. The pattern has continued at the White House. In his West Wing office, like his previous office at Harvard University, Summers has a refrigerator stocked with cans of the decidedly non-Pepsi beverage.

Though Pepsi is available in the West Wing mess, it is rarely, if ever, seen out in the open. On Thursday, the recycling bin outside White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs’ office contained six cans of Diet Coke and one can of Sprite Zero, which is also a Coca-Cola product. In another part of the building, I asked one White House official, who had a can of Diet Coke sitting on his desk, if the Obama Administration had a clear bias for Coke over Pepsi. “I think that’s true,” the official responded, with a smile. “Don’t most Americans?”

To a certain degree, yes. Nationwide, Coke is more popular that Pepsi, but not by the same margin seen among White House staff. Beverage Digest, a trade publication, reported that Coke and Diet Coke had a 27.2% market share of the carbonated beverage market in 2007, compared with a 16.7% share for Pepsi and Diet Pepsi.

As an official matter, the U.S. Government is usually non-partisan in the cola wars. In congressional office buildings, both Coke and Pepsi products are sold at vending machines, as they are in the waiting room at Andrews Air Force Base, where reporters wait to board Air Force One. In the air, the President’s personal flight crew offers either cola to passengers. Nor is soda the only option for officials working in the White House. Several members of the press operation keep going with a steady diet of coffee, while one younger member of the White House web team was spotted recently walking to work with a case of Kombucha, a fermented tea drink sold at health food stores.

The health-conscious President is not known to have a strong preference for either Coke or Pepsi – though he was spotted at one debate sipping from a bottle of Aquafina water, which is made by PepsiCo. Obama is, however, a well-known fan of Honest Tea, a drink made by a company that is 40% owned by Coca-Cola.
