Time To Get Off The Total Drama Island

Why do I live in a NFL sports town that seems to crave, and even thrive on, drama? Honestly, sometimes I wish I lived in a more boring, yet equally, losing NFL market. OK, let me clarify that. A NFL team with a losing record market. The Washington Redskins are far from a losing franchise when it comes to NFL standards. They make more money than most every other franchise out there. Unfortunately, that is one of the problems with this franchise. As long as they continue to be financially successful, there is little reason to truly change.

Are all losing NFL teams drama queens?

Are there actually losing teams out there that somehow seem to avoid the drama?

Are there teams that crave normal life and interactions?

Lets take a look.

Minnesota Vikings: Record 3 – 9 – 1 :

A quick search finds the following news items and topicality:

      • Talk about AP , his injury, and prospects for suiting up for this weeks game.
        • Oh wait, here is an article about shutting down AP to play it safe. Hmmm seems strangely familiar . . .
      • Talk about Jared Allen’s future.
      • Talk about Cordarrelle Patterson’s and not making rookie of the year prospects.
      • And here is a really cool video about how AP sucks at giving presents this year.

Does it come with Miley Cyrus?
Does it come with Miley Cyrus?

So, except for the shutting down for his own and franchise protection, everyone seems to be taking the season in stride and even making funny videos with each other instead of trash talking and saying they suck at passing or running or special teams or even coaching. I think I will put an asterisk next to them as a possible landing spot for enjoying more football with less drama.

But there are plenty more losing teams and markets to check out before I make a final decision.

Atlanta Falcons: Record 3 – 10 – 0 :

A Google search pulls up the expected articles about a team decimated by injuries and needing to rebuild their offensive line.

      • There is also the added discussion threads about support or lack thereof for some of the coaching staff.
      • Again, understandable but perhaps more of the same that I am looking to avoid.
      • The one good thing about the Falcons is that they do have a better receiving corps, when healthy, and in fact could have a much brighter future than my dramaskins.

But we have in-laws that we would like to avoid at all costs so we can scratch Atlanta off the list.

Next up:

St. Louis Rams: Record 5 – 8 – 0

Just the fact that they have all the Redskins draft picks makes them a definite front runner in my book. But lets see what the news and video feeds have to say.

    • There is considerable chatter about Rob Ryan not staying with the Rams and whether or not there are any hard feelings. – Stupid and slightly annoying but basically Boring…
    • Considerable talk about the draft picks and how good that trade is suddenly looking. IF it did not remind me so much about my dreadskins, I might not think this a bad thing.

They seem to have some questionable drama with coaching decisions and all the Redskins draft picks (which in my mind could be a plus) so the Rams just might be worth considering.

Next. . .

Buffalo Bills: Record 4 – 9 – 0

    • An article about Arthur Moats receiving the Ed Block Courage Award which is presented to the player who exemplifies professionalism, courage and good sportsmanship.
    • Dan Carpenter is the most accurate single season kicker in Buffalo history and will be a free agent.
    • They have a number of potential pro-bowl players on the team.
    • They have a great relationship with the community and claim to have some of the best wings in the country.

That, and I tend to like almost anybody from NY, including my wife, puts an asterisk next to Da Bills.

Next:

Cleveland Browns: Record 4 – 9 – 0 :

    • Sorry Cleveland. I know you have a storied history in the NFL but I’ve traveled there and nope. I can’t say I would want to live there.
    • And don’t worry, your arch rivals Cincinnati isn’t any further up my cities I’d want to live in either. The one time I was in Cincinnati, we all went across the river to Kentucky to watch the races and have some great country and steak dinners.

Next:

Houston Oilers Texans: Record 2 – 11 – 0 :

A long time ago, in a job far far away, I almost moved to Houston.

In fact we traveled there . . .

picked out a house (which was totally awesome)

Sandypine Court

and missed our chance to be official Houstonites for life.

    • They too are in the midst of a coaching and QB carousel. Apparently Lovie Smith and Jay Cutler are two popular topics in the rumor mill.
    • Actually, toss any name – Pro or College – out there and chances are somebody in the Houston area is talking about it.
    • This has drama written all over it.
    • But my wife and I really do like the people of Texas and it is NOT Dallas so I’m actually leaving this on the short list.

Especially if that house is on the market.

Last but not least:

Oakland Raiders: Record 4 – 9 – 0 :

Props definitely go to the fans and the awesome garb they so prominently display.

Oakland Raider Fans Rock It

    • There are, as I imagine there always is, a plethora of Darren McFadden articles and articles about the QB situation. Now throw in a couple coaching discussions and I could feel right at home here.

So after discussing this with the family, the first question was why a losing team?

Why not move to a winning team, like the Chiefs, or Denver or New England or Seattle?

Well, I suppose Seattle could work, and possibly the Chiefs and I love the New England area, but simply routing for and or moving to a winning team is too easy.

I want a losing team where the fans and the media market are still nice and have a good – albeit resigned – attitude.

So after much discussion, we have come up with a short list of the best losing teams and markets to either move to or route for.

In no particular order:

  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Houston Texans
  • Buffalo Bills

Honorary mention goes to:

  • St. Louis Rams
  • Oakland Raiders

NFL and Fantasy Football Thoughts – Week 1

Rex and the Jets lose the Circus Label

Are the Jets really that good and is Rex really that smart to have duped us all with their pre-season performance – or lack thereof?

Have the Redskins started the next QB-ing MEME?  Griffining!

Griffining !!!

I take my hat off to Mike and Kyle Shanahan!

They game planned around Robert Griffin and his talents.

The result was a stunning win and performance by the whole team.

They should get the game ball this week.

It seems even the Democrat Party and Bill Clinton want to catch some of that Kevin Ogletree popularity.

His fantasy stock ownership has risen from a paltry .4% to well over 21% in less than one week!

  • Guess I should have picked AP over CJ in the draft.  Sorry I doubted your recovery time dude.
  • All the experts were putting McFadden right up there with the rest of the best.  OK, well not quite the best, but still a lot higher than he should have been.  There are a lot of really upset McFadden owners out there today.
  • Tampa learned how to tackle!
  • Miami still Sucks!
  • Matt Forte is still pissed.

Oh and speaking of hate and discontent.

  • With lots of Fantasy Leagues (including mine) with bonuses kicking in at 300 yds per game for QB’s . . . Flacco’s Stats: 21/29 for 299 yards.  Seriously dude, you couldn’t get 1 more yard?  Really!  Sheesh.

The Time is Now

Oakland Raiders coach Hue Jackson’s mantra all season has been “the time is now,” and he backed that up by dealing for Palmer.

They were also desperate.

Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown had all the time in the world to punish Palmer for holding out and making what they considered unreasonable demands. With Andy Dalton playing reasonably well, Patience is a Virtue.

With the Raiders trading a first and second round draft pick for Palmer, that patience paid off big time for the Bengals organization. Their time is now, and next April, and the April after that.

Payoff for the Raiders will come in the form of a playoff appearance this winter.

Payoff for Palmer is to the tune of $2.5 million guaranteed this year, $12 million with $5 million guaranteed in 2012, $13 million in 2013 and $15 in 2014.

Not too shabby for a guy staging his version of protest by occupying southern California with T.J Houshmandzadeh and a bunch of high school football players.

So Palmer get $2.5 million for staging a sit in.
The Bengals get 2 great draft pick slots to build upon.
note: given the Raiders history of draft picks, this is probably a good thing.
And the Raiders get somebody with some decent level of QB talent injecting some excitement into the team, fans and organization for, well at least one week.

The time is now for everyone to show that this was a good trade for everyone involved.

Speed Kills

The Raiders Love Speed, blinding speed with “potential”.

Today we found out that Pryor is a Raider.  He made the mistake of running so fast Al Davis saw nothing but a blur.

So the Raiders organization reached out and and drafted him to be their next great big star.

We just don’t know if it is going to be as a QB or a Receiver or Both. . . Maybe he can pass to himself? Who knows.

Now the only problem I have with this is one word.  Raiders.

Pryor is a great talent.  He would not have gotten as far as he has without it.  Even with his problems. The trouble is, well Pryor himself.

Too bad he was not drafted by someone, or an organization with a coach, who is good at direction and molding.  Somebody who could make Pryor succeed in the NFL.

Who in the Raiders organization is like that?

Sadly, nobody.

Hue Jackson is a good, perhaps great offensive minded coach.  He devises schemes and plans to make best use of the talent his players have.  That is why he is a well respected “players” coach.

One of Jackson’s former bosses was a great “ball coach” but stunk as a head coach; at least in the NFL where leadership and discipline is what molds players, teams and championships.

Now, I am not saying Jackson stinks as a head coach, I just am not sure he has what it takes to mold character.

There are instances when I say . . . I hate it when I’m right.

I hope this is not one of them.

Good luck Terrelle Pryor, you’re going to need it.

Two is better than one…

That must be the Raiders new theme.

I’ll admit it. I’ve always liked the Raiders logo, team colors, costumes and uniforms.

I just never realized that they have a new philosophy.

To do everything in two.

They now have two McFaddens.
Darren McFadden
Walter McFadden

Walter hails from Auburn.
Jason Campbell hails from…
Auburn.

Not only did they just draft their second McFadden,
They drafted their second Campbell.

Bruce Campbell

Bruce hails from Maryland.

Last years surprise draft pick for the Raiders was Darrius Heyward-Bey,
from…
You guessed it, Maryland.

Darrius Heyward-Bey is a speedster
He ran a 60 meter indoor time of 6.82-seconds his senior year of College and in 2006, he ran a 4.23-second 40-yard dash. (That is Darrell Green speed).

But move over Darrius, because the Raiders have just drafted their second speedster,
Jacoby Ford.
He set the ACC record in the 60 meter with a time of 6.52-seconds and reportedly he ran a 4.126-second 40-yard dash.

Jacoby Ford Hails from Clemson.
They Raiders do not have anybody else from Clemson…

Yet…

First, Post Impressions…

Seattle:
Did not address their RB needs in the draft, so they go raiding. Obtaining two veterans (Leon Washington , LenDale White). Good acquisitions for the Seahawks!

Raiders:
Speaking of Raiding, the Raiders get 2 for 1. As in two Campbell’s. Jason Campbell from the Washington Redskins who is far better than any QB Oakland currently has and …. Campbell from the University of Maryland who has a lot of talent and ability (with any luck) will develop into a fine NFL starter. Actually the Raiders picked up a couple good offensive linemen, so I think Jason will do just fine.

Redskins:
Finally got around to adding depth and talent to their offensive line. I just wish they had been able to do it before the 7th round. They also added a talented LB for the new 3 – 4 scheme , a TE and another WR. The TE was puzzling and I was thinking maybe he is a good blocker and they think he could move in or drop back as a pseudo halfback. Well, sure enough, Shanahan plans on having him compete for Fullback. I still don’t know why they picked the WR (he does not fit Shanahan prototype) but for some reason they liked him.

So:
Why did the Redskins and Raiders trade Jason for a 2012 4th round pick? Not a pick this year (too deep a pool) not 2011, but 2012! Could it be because someone thinks there will be a lockout next year?

Speaking of QB’s.
I think Colt McCoy and Clausen landed very well in the draft with teams and organizations which could do them a world of good. Though Carolina probably feels better than Clausen does at the moment. Carolina really did not have a lot of good depth at QB before the draft, now they do.

And and speaking of having depth at QB?
Once McNabb was off the market, why did the Vikings wait until the 6th round to draft a QB?

AFL Raiders

Welcome to my review of the Oakland Raiders web site and 50th anniversary tribute.

I only wish I was as fluent as they are….

See, they have multi-lingual versions of their website!!!

The Raiders maintain a global presence and communicate with the worldwide Raider Nation through the team’s official web properties which feature original and translated content in six different languages – Tagalog, Japanese, German, Chinese, Spanish and English.

The Raiders became and continue to be the first and only NFL team to produce a full-service Spanish-language web site. During the 2004 regular season, the Raiders became the first team to offer original content in German with the launch of Raiders auf Deutsch.

Each site is geared towards those particular cultural interests and topicality!

Very Cool!

They also have a great Kids page which features downloadable pictures for kids to color, various games and contests.

And of course they have a well done history page.

And feature all their 50th anniversary gear at their store…

And have a great Fan Page where you can download pictures, wallpapers, widgets, join a booster club or even start your own.

Kudos to the Raiders !!! and Two Big Thumbs Up!
