Profiling – It’s a Judgment Call

silhouette profiling nfl playersProfiling often has a negative connotation associated with it; but when it comes to personality profiling, many people, corporations, and sports teams, put a lot of emphasis on this testing methodology.

Picking the right people, and the right combination of people – talent – personalities, is a key ingredient to building successful teams.

The powers that be are judging you, or any potential candidate, to see how well you will fit in and help them and the team to be successful.  In other words to win.

Though not a personality test, the NFL has had the Wonderlic tests for years. The Wonderlic does not help with judging personality or physical capability.  It is geared towards comprehension and problem solving.

So teams have in the past relied on certain psychologists to evaluate players, or at least come up with a list of questions to find out how players will handle stress, fame, fortune and life as it exists in the NFL.

The question – “Would you rather be a dog or a cat?” is one such question.  Dr. Robert Troutwine has tested and interviewed hundreds if not thousands of potential draftees and says this question has a lot of symbolism.

A dog is man’s best friend. A cat is more independent.  Players who go for dogs tend to like structure and being part of a team is more important to them.  Cats are guys who are more comfortable being a more solo contributor.  You have to let him feel like he’s making the decisions.

Troutwine assessed Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning for the Indianapolis Colts.  His assessment stated that Leaf would have more problems coping with early failures than Manning and would have problems with mounting pressure.  He also consulted the Colts general manager Bill Polian that Edgerrin James was a better match for his team than Ricky Williams because James’ personality was more adaptable to having a bigger star – Manning – on the team.

But personality tests, just like any test, do not give a complete picture of the player.  What a personality test does do, is provide yet another data point to consider when evaluating a candidate.  It helps those who make the decisions, and those who are responsible for drafting good talent that will succeed, identify likely trends or responses to certain situations someone may face while playing in the NFL.  Such as: will they cope well with failure or be adaptable to a team with bigger names who attracting more attention?

I myself recently took such a test (it was a combination personality profile and Wonderlic type test) as part of a candidate screening and interview process. The personality test was filled with questions that asked what you thought about certain personality types or personal behavior and whether or not you valued feelings and those who do or not. The company and the testing organization made a big deal to make sure you understood there were no right or wrong answers. They also advised not to try and answer how you thought they, the company, wanted you to answer. Just like with the cat and dog question, different personalities are better suited for different roles.

So it is with great curiosity that I hear certain recently “troubled” NFL players “passed” their personality profile tests. Namely Aaron Hernandez.

Now I do not know what questions were part of this test, but I am sure most did not concentrate on guns and behavioral tendencies to commit, correction be accused of committing, felony offenses.

These tests again, are geared towards finding players who will “fit” well into a particular team or organization.  They are not necessarily geared toward identifying someone who might become violent.

Can the NFL do more to identify those who will cope with stress and failure well and fit into a particular mold?  Yes.

In fact just this past year the NFL has introduced a new testing criteria to compliment the Wonderlic test.  These new questions measure a wide range of competencies, including learning styles, motivation, decision-making skills, responding to pressure or unexpected stimuli, and core intellect.  Every NFL team will now receive a one-page profile for each player who completes the new exam.  The profile will assess a player’s learning type and personality and suggest ideal coaching styles to instruct the athlete.

When someone says that a particular person “passed” his or her personality profile test, it only means that chances are the candidate will fit in with the organization and perform well in the roll they are considering hiring them for.

So when Hernandez (a potential top 1 or 2 round pick) fell to the fourth round in the NFL draft because of questions regarding drug use and failed drug tests, Belichick took a chance because Hernandez has immense talent and “passed” their tests to see how well he would fit into the Patriots organization and offensive scheme.

Could the NFL do more testing to spot even more dangerous behavioral tendencies?  Again, yes.  It is possible to do more and even better testing.  But I believe that no amount of testing will eliminate all the possibilities.  Plus, sometimes, test results can be wrong. One would not want to falsely accuse and potentially hinder another career because of one question on a test.

Tests will always provide more information.  This information will always be incomplete and subjective – open to interpretation and up to others to decide if it is relevant or not.  In the end the decision-making will ultimately come down to a judgment call by the coach and or the GM.

Smoke Signals

Who_will_be_top_pick

Tuesday marks the start of Greed Free Agency in the NFL.

Tuesday also marks the start of Drafting electing a new Pope by the Conclave.

What if they switched how the selection process was done?

The top free agents would blow smoke signals when they picked a new team.

And the Conclave would choose a new Pope by way of a draft or whoever raised the most money.

But seriously . . .

Which NFL free agent do you think blows the most smoke?

Who has the most over hyped talent?

Who will be the most over paid?

And, which team will fork over the most money?

Yes folks, it’s going to be an interesting week!

Grammy Red Carpet: How Can They Give Katy Perry An F

That is not even her cup size!

grammy-katy-perry-why-is-this-an-f

Yes, she obviously did not follow the dress code memo but, does she really deserve an F?

I took a look at some of the other Red Carpet Fashion pictures and have determined that the media is unfair in their judgement of poor Katy.

Lets Compare:

Katie Perry vs Ashanti:

grammy-katy-perry-ashanti

Katy Perry vs Kelly Rowland:

grammy-katy-perry-kelly-rowland

Katie Perry vs Miranda Lambert:

grammy-katy-perry-miranda-lambert

But There were fashion violations beyond the cleavage rule.  For instance:

Katy Perry vs Florence Welch:

grammy-katy-perry-florence-welch

And . .

Katy Perry vs Dave Groyl Wife’s Dress:

grammy-katy-perry-dave-groyl-wife-dopler-affect

But, that is no where near the worst of it. . .

Katy Perry vs Adele:

And . . .

Last but certainly not least . . .

Katy Perry vs Kate Peirson:

grammy-katy-perry-kate-pierson

And to add yet some more credibility to Katy’s Dress, I’ve been told that “green” in the “in” color this year.

Obviously Jack Black agrees.  (notice the shoes)

The Dress Code Memo had some pretty specific terminology regarding what was appropriate and what was not.  Obviously, some stars followed this dress code and others did not.

But, since this is a sports blog, it would be negligent of me if I did not apply this dress code to the NFL.

Lets see how this applies.

Quote #1:

Please be sure that buttocks and breasts are adequately covered.

Terrence Cody at the NFL Combine does not pass the test.

Perhaps he needs the proper fashion cover-up. . .

Quote #2:

Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare flesh under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack.

And perhaps the most flagrant violation courtesy Detroit Lions :

Lions-Jock--600x399

Yet, even this too can be fixed. . .

Sort of . . .

Oh, and we certainly can not forget about the lovely cheerleaders:

nfl-grammy-cheerleaders-cleavage-32

With a little help from Kate Pierson’s wardrobe, we can attempt to fix this right up . . .

And just to prove that I have an unhealthy fascination with Katy Perry, there were others who rocked the Red Carpet too!

Carrie Underwood gets an A+ in my book.

And Penny does not get a “C” EVER !!!

So, what did you think of the memo, the Red Carpet, and the fashion malfunctions?

I Must Be Dreaming

It’s good to be a DC sports fan now.  Wait, did I just say that?  Somebody pinch me and wake me up because I must be dreaming.

The Caps are playing real good hockey and advanced past the first round of the NHL Playoffs.

The Nationals are competing for the best, yes I did say best, record in Baseball.

And the Washington Redskins have RG3 as their latest, and certainly, greatest QB in recent history.

The first round of the NFL draft is over and a record number of trades, swaps and moves up and down the board in a fast a furious fashion.  You can thank the new rookie wage scale for that excitement.  IT was absolutely great to witness!

The Vikings started the night off by juking Cleveland out of three picks for swapping the 3rd and 4th picks.  Yes Richardson is good and will be, by all accounts, a great RB; but to give up 3 picks to move up one spot just because you think the Bucs or somebody else is talking the same deal?  But in the end, everybody got the players we thought they would and the Vikings got more draft picks.  Good Deal!

I feel compelled to say at this point that “everybody got the players we thought” is a bit of an overstatement.  Mel Kiper totally whiffed on the Richardson, Blackmon and Claiborne picks and scored a less than impressive 18% correct, 13% if you take away the two gimmie picks of Luck and RG3, for the entire first round!

Even though I am a diehard Redskin fan, I applaud the Cowboys for making a bold and not expensive trade up to grab Claiborne.  Lets see how he does against RG3 and the Skins before calling this one a success though.  😉

Our other two NFC East Rivals also had a pretty good 1st round with the Eagles D getting a little bit scarier with Fletcher Cox and the Giants grabbing another power runner in David Wilson.  I certainly hope the skins look to adding bodies to their O line in the later rounds.

The other noteworthy teams from the first round, in my mind are:

–          Fellow Minnesotans on the same Cardinal team – Frees up Larry and Floyd gets a great mentor and the cards didn’t have to do anything to get him.  Great Pick.

–          The Patriots moved up the draft!  Whose running this show?  Really, Coach B never moves up.  But they desperately needed defensive help and got just that with Jones and Hightower.  Impressive

–          Dear Jags, no more offensive excuses with drafting yet another offensive weapon in Blackmon.

–          The Panthers get a great tackle machine with Kuechly

–          And the Rams have so many picks that they are going to just start hoarding talent like Brockers.

Oh and believe it or not, ESPN has opened their Fantasy Football and you can select draft rooms and reactivate your leagues and create teams and  . . .

Yes it is great to be a Sports Fan!

Drinks On Me

Congratulations to ShanePHallam who correctly picked 3 out of 4 contest questions correctly and won a Starbucks Giftcard!

  • The first team to move up was actually the Jags.  Yes the Vikings swapped with the Browns but that deal was done right before the draft started.  It would not have mattered anyway, nobody picked the Browns to move up.
  • Mel got a whole whopping 6 picks correct.  And that was with the first 2 (Luck and Griffin) already known to the world.  That equates to a terrible 18% correct and if you take away the two gimmies, it drops to 13% correct.  He did not get ANY of the Richardson, Blackmon, Claiborne, picks correct when most everybody on the internet did.  Sheeesh!
  • Richardson was the first to go.
  • And the Dolphins did not screw up yet another QB acquisition and somehow managed to pick Tannehill.

Congratulations again to ShanePHallam and thanks to everyone for entering!

Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained

Let’s face it. RG3 was the last potentially elite rated QB left on the boards.

Andrew Luck is all but committed to Indianapolis (and vise versa).

Matt Barkley took himself out of a crowded field to potentially be #1 next year. (Bold Move)

Peyton’s Family told Snyder to F#@! off.

That leaves RG3 and a bunch of other, at best, 2nd and 3rd round rated QB’s.

One QB named RG3 and at least two or more desperate teams interested in him.

The Laws of supply and demand made this a sellers market and the Rams were the beneficiaries.

The Rams now have bookoo draft picks over the next few years to build a quality team. The Reskins now have a good quality athlete who has the potential to be a franchise QB. Congratulations go to both teams for making this happen.

I applaud the Redskins for taking the future into their own hands. They swapped this years 1st rounder with the Rams and added their 2nd round pick plus traded both their 2013 and 2014 1st rounders. That is a lot of picks but, for a franchise in search of and in need of a talented QB – who also happens to be the only top rated one left on the board – , the price is NOT unreasonable. Unless if Shanni’s friend welches on an agreement and accepts another offer with Cleveland, the deal is all but done.

Now the Redskins are faced with the challenge of building around their future QB.  They still have 6 draft picks left this year; a 3rd, two 4th , 5th, 6th and 7th round.  Between having lots of cap room for free agency, which starts this Tuesday, and the picks they have left in the draft, there is plenty of opportunity for the Redskins to continue rebuilding, and now build around RG3.  Last year, Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen turned six draft picks into 12.  So, there is hope.

Hopefully they will not allow Snyder to turn this into another Steve Young story of a promising young and talented QB in a bad organization who gets written off in a couple years only to be traded to a better organization where he ends up thriving.

Based on last years off-season performance.  I believe Mike and Bruce are up to the task.

The Best Laid Plans

Can be ruined by an unfortunate  circumstance

Back last December, all was going well for the Redskins and their draft prospects.  Yes, you read that right; all was going well.  While everyone was calling for the team to “Suck for Luck”, the team was trying to do one thing and one thing only.  Win Games.  And with each passing week, their draft position changed dependent on who won and who lost.   The Redskins did what true professional team players do; play to win; and ultimately a spot on the active roster.

The players could not be worried or concerned about the Redskin’s draft position.  And I am sure that neither Mike nor Bruce gave it a whole lot of thought either except when asked by the media.  The coaches and staff were focused on one thing and one thing only; giving everyone on the team the best chance to win.

I bet that in the back of their scheming little minds, Mike and Bruce thought  –  “hey, no problem, there are going to be three great QB’s (Luck, Barkley, RG3) in the draft and we stand a good chance of getting any one of them at a spot (somewhere between 4th and 8th).  Shweeet!”

After all, who wouldn’t be happy with any one of those three wonder kids behind center?

Then, on or about December 22, 2011, everything changed.

Matt Barkley announced he was going back to USC.

The Redskins, and even the Browns, with that coveted 4th spot, suddenly found themselves cursing fate and perhaps Matt’s decision too.  After all, both teams’ best laid plans, and dreams of easily landing a quality QB just got tossed out the window.

Now, both the Skins and the Browns are left with the agonizing decision of, how much, how badly do we want it, is he worth it and is there any other options further down or in free agency?  Suddenly, there is a lot more risk and uncertainty to the decisions that need to be made.  In fact, either one of these teams may very well decide that they want RG3 at any price, or stay where they are in the draft, or (do like the skins did last year) and trade down to get more picks this year and next or even address certain needs via free agency.  That is it.

I could go on like every other sports writer and blogger out there and give you all the what if’s, supposed pros and cons, reasons for and against a certain decision.  But I will not.  That is up to people like Mike and Bruce to think about, and come up with a game plan for both free agency and the draft.  That is why they get paid the big bucks.

Pay me $5 million a year, and I would be more than happy to do the same and tell everyone everything about it.

But I am not, so I won’t.

But what I will say is this; The next time you hear or read one of those sports prognosticators and his or her predictions about RG3 and the draft, you can thank Mr. Barkley.

Football is Back!

Some days are better than others. Today, was better than most.

In fact this week has progressively gotten better and better.

First, I would like to personally thank Judge Susan Nelson.

I know, I’ve already done this, but without her ruling, I truly believe I would not have been nearly as excited about the draft as I became on Thursday.

So, Judge, this bud is for you!

Secondly two very special items arrived in the mail this week.
A specially designed bumper sticker and my new specialty license plates.

Feel free to spread the word and pick up you very own bumper sticker at the Fumbled Returns Store!

And yes fbrtns.com resolves to this blog! Pretty Cool 🙂

Thirdly, after being put in a decidedly better mood by the first and second events, I found myself getting more and more hyped for the draft.

#1 for me. Atlanta! All I can say is WOW. What a bold move. They were looking for that one player and Cleveland, in desperate need of as many players as they can get, traded. As far as the respected organizations go, I think Cleveland got the potentially better deal. Provided they pick well. I find it very hard to justify most any player as being worth 4 picks. But hey, Kudos to the Falcons for going out on a limb.

Now why am I so excited about this pick? I’ll tell you why. Last year I dumped all my players in my fantasy league back into the draft. Even my personal favorite DeSean Jackson. Everybody was down on the Falcons with Matt Ryan and Michael Turner coming off of injuries. So instead of a keeper for my first round selection, I got the 6th overall pick and got Michael Turner and then later in the draft picked up Matt Ryan. Now the Falcons are even better with another good offensive weapon. Unfortunately, it looks like I might be forced to decide – do I keep Ryan or Turner.

#2. Tennessee got a great QB. I was beginning to wonder if Locker was going to be available at the Skins number 10 spot. Which leads me to . . .

#3. I’m glad Washington traded down and picked up another second rounder. Mainly because it was the Kiddies bed time and I did not want to miss the skins pick. So, I got a chance to do my kid duty and watch the skins pick. Hurrah!

As far as who they got at #16 . . . Kerrigan is a fine addition to their defense. It certainly looks like the Skins are hell bent on running a 3-4 and are equally bent on acquiring the personnel to compliment that scheme.

#4 OK Sam ol’ buddy, and anybody else who is out there, Do the Vikings have their next franchise QB in Ponder? Lord knows they needed to get an extra one and he was perhaps only 1 of 2 left worth considering. I think Ponder has the potential to be really good, just not quite a number 12 pick, but hey, what do I know?
