Want More Caffeine, Inhale It

A caffeine inhaler made by AeroShot just went on the market late last month in Massachusetts and New York.

Here is how it works; consumers put one end of the canister in their mouths and breathe in, releasing a fine powder that dissolves almost instantly. Each canister contains B vitamins, plus 100 milligrams of caffeine powder, about the equivalent of the caffeine in a large cup of coffee.

Because of loophole, AeroShot didn’t require FDA review before hitting the U.S. market because it’s sold as a dietary supplement. But Sen. Charles Schumer (NY) said he met with the FDA Commissioner who later agreed to review the safety and legality of AeroShot.

“I am worried about how a product like this impacts kids and teens, who are particularly vulnerable to overusing a product that allows one to take hit after hit after hit, in rapid succession,”

Schumer said.

A valid point and one well worth considering. However, do you know what other group of people are vulnerable to overusing legal, enhancing drugs?

Athletes.

I’m wondering if this inhaler makes it past FDA and legal hurdles, could athletes start using this during games? Would it help? Could it hurt? And don’t think they would not be prone to overuse it. Look at how often they are seen sucking in Oxygen on the sidelines. Yes, it is different but who’s to say they don’t mix in a “legal” additive into the mix just so they can get a little more kick back into their performance.

Honestly, I really don’t see the benefit to this product and quite frankly I think the only reason it has been developed is because someone decided they could and make a profit off of it. Classic exploitation for making an easy buck. I’m just afraid that it could lead to something more.
