Sports And Politics Don’t Mix – Oh Yeah, Wanna Bet?

Redskins support question 7 ballot referendum for gambling casinoThe Washington Redskins Organization is urging fans to vote in favor of next months ballot referendum (Question 7) to build a Vegas style casino in PG county.

The NFL has long tried to distance themselves and their players from gambling but there is nothing in the NFL guidelines prohibiting support of such a referendum ballot.

Say what you want about Snyder and the Skins; I actually like the fact he never misses a chance to rub something in the commissioners, and fellow owners, face.

And no, Snyder is not a financial backer of the proposed site. But, they do have an official endorsement with a local hotel which is often used for promotional give-aways.

Question 7 commercials, both for and against, have been proliferating as much as presidential ads recently.

And speaking of presidential politics and gambling, one can even bet on the debate scheduled for tonight. Odds exist for what color tie each candidate will where to the first cliché to be used.

People Watching Is Not A Sport

But it can be a spectator sport, and a whole lot of fun!

This past weekend my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary by going out to Charles Town Races and Slots. As in past years, we had great food and a great time watching and betting on the horse races.

And just to prove that people watching is a spectator sport, Wikipedia defines a spectator sport as follows:

require venues or sometimes stadiums in which the fans may observe an event.

So, if the shoe fits (as you will see) then we also had fun watching some of the people in attendance.

Like the . . .

Couple trying to photo-bomb their own picture.

  • Stood smooching and making out in front of the winners circle while holding up their smart phone/camera.
  • Of course they had to try several times to get just the right angle.

Dolly Parton Wannabe

  • All the cougars of WV dressed up trashy as only good ol’ country can do, except without the money.

And last but not least . . . The Katie Fan Club.

  • a group of 7 or 8 20 somethings (boys) dressed up in preppy polo clothes and
  • hard leather loafers (some quite feminine looking) and no socks.
  • After wondering about their orientation, I have been informed by my hip teenage daughter that they are “sperries” worn by all the rich kids who spend their parents money. And this description as well as the “shoes” certainly fits.
  • I call them the Katie Fan Club because they were all cheering for the loan female jockey (Katie Reynolds), who obviously could not hear them. She just happened to be riding “Thanksforthedrink” and came in 7th.
